Google’s long-standing dominance in the search engine market may soon face competition from OpenAI, which is apparently getting ready to release its own AI-driven search tool thanks to its cooperation with Microsoft.
Two people with knowledge of the situation who spoke with Reuters claim that OpenAI will reveal its AI-powered search tool on Monday. The launch of this product is closely aligned with Google’s annual I/O conference, which begins on Tuesday and is expected to include a number of announcements pertaining to artificial intelligence.
Even while Google is still the industry leader in search, it has also been making adjustments to further integrate AI into its features. More than a year ago, Google started testing AI-powered search summaries in the US. Last month, the company extended testing to a limited group of signed-in UK customers.
There will be more competition for Google and other companies like Perplexity as a result of OpenAI’s possible entry into the search engine business. This week, Perplexity and SoundHound announced a collaboration to improve voice assistants for Internet of Things devices by utilizing SoundHound’s AI-powered search capabilities.
OpenAI appears to be relying on the nexus of artificial intelligence and search engine technology to establish its market position, with strong backing from Microsoft. In February 2023, Microsoft first included OpenAI’s AI capabilities into its Microsoft Office suite and Bing search engine. These advanced functions were then only accessible to premium members.
It is anticipated that OpenAI’s next search product would build upon ChatGPT, its current flagship tool. According to reports from Bloomberg, the new feature would let users ask ChatGPT queries and get answers that take data from the internet and provide the relevant citations. This could contain links to different blogs or Wikipedia articles, as well as any relevant diagrams or pictures that serve as examples for the questions.
Should OpenAI’s new search product launch be successful, it may herald a dramatic change in the way people search the internet—away from conventional search algorithms and toward more integrated, AI-driven results that vastly improve user experience.
