The additions include major world languages with over 100 million speakers as well as languages spoken by small Indigenous communities. Notably, around a quarter of these new languages are from Africa – representing the most extensive expansion of African languages on Google Translate to date.

Some of the newly supported languages in Google Translate include Afar spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia; Cantonese which has been highly requested; Manx – a Celtic language revived from near extinction; NKo – a standardized West African Manding language; Punjabi (Shahmukhi) widely spoken in Pakistan; Tamazight (Amazigh) – a Berber language across North Africa; and Tok Pisin – an English-based creole used in Papua New Guinea.

When selecting these new language varieties for translation support on Google Translate platform, factors like regional variations and dialects were considered. The aim was to prioritize commonly used varieties within each language while acknowledging their diverse nature.

The introduction of PaLM 2 large language model played a crucial role in efficiently learning closely related languages like Awadhi and Marwadi close to Hindi or French creoles such as Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole.
